The annual Oudtshoorn Youth Festival, which creates opportunities for all riders under the age of 19 to take part on a regular basis against other riders in the country, heads to the Western Cape from Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 July 2017. The emphasis is on team and province rather than individual participation.
The festival showcases various cycling codes for young riders to get more exposure to the sport and what it has to offer, and creates platforms for the younger age groups to show and develop their potential outside of the SA National Championships. As the emphasis is on team and mass participation, all events will be structured in such a way that points will be awarded to every participant.
The focus is more on bike skills and therefore the bunch track events were incorporated to allow the youth to develop their skills in a safe and secure environment while simultaneously providing them the opportunity to watch and learn from the more experienced participants, and of course more spectator friendly for parents. It also provides cross-pollination of events and exposure to different cycling environments.
The event has changed from four days to three days in order to be more time and pocket-friendly.
The 2017 Oudtshoorn Youth Festival will run as follows:
Monday 3 July – Road Race (Highgate circuit)
Tuesday 4 July – Team Time Trial (Highgate Circuit) and Criterium (Aurial College Circuit)
Wednesday 5 July – MTB TT and MTB Oval Track racing (Quad Club) 1500m, Scratch and elimination races.
Oudtshoorn is a fantastic part of the Western Cape and locals and tourists alike return every year to the prime Garden Route spot.
