Cycling South Africa is proud to be associated with the newly formed South African Schools Association after receiving their application to become an Associated Member of Cycling SA.
By becoming an Associated Member of Cycling SA, the Schools Association will have representation on Cycling SA’s Board, which will ensure continuity in planning and cooperation. Cycling SA therefore welcomes Mr Deon Steyn as President of the Schools Association to our next ordinary general meeting, where the association’s membership will be formalised. The Schools Association will fulfil a critical role in the development of the sport at grass roots level and ensuring the sport is accessible.
The Schools Association will be responsible for the sport of cycling at school level under the auspices of the Schools Act and the Department of Education. The focus of the School Association will be on school team participation and not on the individual. Provincial participation and representation will be restricted to school level only and individual riders that would like to take up the sport at a higher level will participate at Cycling SA’s events and will be eligible to achieve Provincial and National Colours as well as compete at Provincial & National Championships. For these purposes school riders will be encouraged to become members of a cycling club to further their career prospects. Schools will also have the opportunity to form a club and affiliate with their provincial body to assist their scholars in participating at a higher level.
Mr William Newman, president of Cycling South Africa, said: “Engaging with schools is essential for our success at addressing Transformation and Development and growing our sport. It is also in line with the National Sports and Recreation Plan to which we subscribe. Our focus area is club developments at community level, schools development and to break down barriers to entry. The Schools Association with their manifesto fits perfectly into this goal.”
It should be noted that the SA Schools Association is a National Body and it will cater for all the disciplines within cycling. We wish the Schools Association all of the best during the building process in getting the schools and their personnel involved.
