South Africa’s junior men and junior women have claimed gold medals in their respective opening cycling events in the Team Time Trial discipline at the 2014 African Youth Games in Gabarone, Botswana, on Sunday 25 May.
The junior women’s team raced earlier in the day, completing two laps of the 10.5km course. Starting last out of the blocks, the three riders – Michelle Benson, Catherine Colyn and Frances du Toit – clocked the fastest time of the morning, even catching and passing some of the other teams that had started before them. Their winning margin was three minutes ahead of Egypt and Nigeria.
In the Junior men’s race that was held later in the day, Ivan Venter, Carl Bonthuys, Stefan de Bod and Graeme Ockhuis led the charge along the 33km route, starting third-to-last and competing amongst fifteen African teams. Their solid performance secured gold medals in a winning time of 39 minutes 21.41 seconds, winning the charge against Morocco and Algeria.
Monday 26 May served as a rest day for the cyclists. On Tuesday, their competition will continue with the Individual Time Trials. Michelle Benson and Frances du Toit will represent the women, whilst Ivan Venter and Stefan de Bod will represent the men.
