With just under a week to go to the 2016 SA National Track, Para-cycling and Omnium Championships, preparations are close to completion and a promising record-entry field will have spectators on the edge of their seats during the Westbourne Cycling Track in Port Elizabeth from 28 March to 3 April.
Pleasant weather awaits the riders who will descend upon the “Friendly City” to battle for their respective category championship jerseys. Riding in new colours this season, is Team Telkom’s Nolan Hoffman, defending champion in the 15km Scratch and 40km Points races.
Hoffman has been off the bike since the end of the Cape Town Cycle Tour this year, and man-down with the flu. “I wasn’t able to train for a whole week, so I’m not too sure how I will go at the Champs,” he said.
The turn of the season has definitely seen common colds and sniffles flying around, often detrimental to the training regimes of a lot of the riders. “I have decided that because of being not 100%, I won’t enter every single event, I will focus specifically on certain events and then try my best at those,” Hoffman added.
Hoffman has chosen to preserve his energy and has decided to take part in the bunch races, the Points race as well as the Scratch race.
Well into the first quarter of the year, Hoffman is looking forward to the next few months and sees the Aquelle Tour Durban as a goal for him. “Now that the first part of the year is almost over, I’m trying to get some great form for the ’Tour, which takes place at the end of April,” he said.
Hoffman went on to mention how the Tour Durban event suits and benefits the sprinters. “Even with the hills, they aren’t too bad at all so the sprinters tend to stay with the bunch going up,” he added.
Hoffman chatted briefly about the rest of the “boys in blue”, his Team Telkom teammates. Being in a new team with one or two new faces is always a change, but the transition for many of the teammates has been a smooth one. “It’s been good. All the guys are happy,” he concluded.
The 2016 SA National Track, Para-cycling and Omnium Championships take place at the Westbourne Cycling Track in Port Elizabeth from 28 March to 3 April, with the SA Track and Para-cycling Championships running from Monday 28 March to Friday 1 April and the SA Omnium Championships running from Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 April.
