Johannesburg Junior Track Cycling Programme draws great interest

Just over two-dozen junior and under-16 riders congregated in Johannesburg for the first Junior Track Cycling Programme training camp of 2014, which took place at the weekend.

Some riders came from as far as Nelspruit and Bloemfontein. The specific objective of the training camp was to improvement the skills, techniques and knowledge of the riders towards an improved cycling performance.

With focus placed on the various demands on the track cyclists and how these should be handled, topics included physical, psychological, lifestyle, equipment and environmental demands. A presentation and testing by Liandi van der Walt, Sport Scientist from NWU, provided a solid foundation to the riders to improve their attitudes towards training and racing. Training camp participants also had the opportunity to learn, apply and improve on a range of cycling techniques and tactics whilst under the supervision of the coaches.

“It is great to see the dedication displayed by the riders and their eagerness to learn and improve their own performance,” said Annerine Wenhold, coordinator and sprinter coach of the Junior Track Cycling Programme. “Through their positive attitudes, we’ve seen how they have embraced this opportunity to learn new skills and techniques, practice that in a racing environment, and form new friendships over the course of the weekend.

“We’ve got the talent in South Africa. With the proper guidance, support, solid coaching and training, our riders can succeed on the road towards their goals and dreams.”

The next Junior Track Cycling Programme is scheduled to take place at the Bellville Velodrome, from 30-31 March 2014. All interested Juniors and u16s are reminded that the closing dates for entry to this event is 20 March 2014.
