A very hot Mexico has greeted our two Para-cycling Track athletes at the UCI Para Track World Championships, taking place in Aguascalientes, Mexico, from 11-13 April 2014. Dane Wilson and Roxy Burns have been acclimatizing to the conditions well.
Burns competed in the 500m Time Trial, where she raced head-to-head against the World Record holder and current Paralympic Champion Jianping Ruan from China, plus five other competitors. Burns finished sixth, posting a time of 42.964 seconds, her fastest time since 2011.
Wilson competed in the last heats of the Pursuits on Friday night, also competing against a World Record holder and current Paralympic Champion, Michael Gallagher from Australia. Wilson improved his own national record in the 4km C5 Men Individual Pursuit by 18 seconds when he posted a time of 4 minutes 54.112 seconds. This placed him ninth in the competition, earning South Africa valuable points towards rider berths for Rio Olympic Games in 2016.
Burns competed in the C4 Women Individual Pursuit on Saturday morning, finishing in sixth place in a new national record time of 4 minutes 29 seconds.
Wilson rode the 1000m Time Trial later in the day. He finished in 9th place, posting a time of 1:07.535, which was five seconds faster than his national record. Paralympic Champion Alfonso Cabello won the TT, improving his own world record time in 1:01.683.
Wilson races again this evening against 15 other C5 and C4 category men.
Cycling South Africa’s national team manager, Sheldon Bole, confirms that the track is a hot 35°C, dry, and super fast. Out of the seven events that were held on the opening day, six World Records were broken, with the seventh record safe by only 0.008 seconds.
