The passing of cycling legend Basil Cohen

It is with tremendous sadness that we bid farewell to Legend of the Pedal Basil Cohen, whom passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after a lengthy battle with illness. Basil was, as many of us are aware, an extremely capable cyclist, representing South Africa at the Maccabi Games, and was, as the major shareholder in Deale & Huth, the founder of the cycle trade, as we know it today: being the importer/wholesaler/retailer, at that time, of virtually all of the foremost brands in world.

Cycling SA launches new online community platform

Cycling South Africa is proud to launch their brand new online community platform for their membership database. The online platform has been created as an effective online tool for members to sort cycling news according to their preference. For example, members who have a keen interest in Track cycling, and who live in the Western Cape, can now filter their news according to the “Track” and “Western Cape” streams.

Cycling SA President William Newman attended the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee’s (SASCOC) General Meeting at SASCOC House in Johannesburg on Saturday 5 April. SASCOC President Gideon Sam opened proceedings with his address, which centred largely on the National Federations (NF) adhering to the essence of the National Sport and Recreation Plan (NSRP) in all of our actions and to be cognisant of the Government White Paper on sport.

Athletes’ Commission: Make your voice heard

Cycling South Africa’s Co-opted Rider Representative, Lise Olivier, is in the process of establishing an official Athletes’ Commission for the National Federation. In doing so, Olivier is calling for interested cyclists in the various cycling disciplines of Track, Road, BMX, Mountain Bike and Para-cycling, to submit nominations to be part of Cycling South Africa’s Athletes’ Commission.

Cycling South Africa is devastated at the news of the untimely death of multiple Track cycling champion, Jeanne Nell. Nell sustained fatal head injuries in a tragic fall during a Keirin race at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town last night, and died later in hospital.

Rulings regarding U23 and Elite Road Championship Jerseys

The 2014 Time Freight SA Road Cycling Championships delivered a spectacle of racing hardly seen before in South Africa. Louis Meintjes (Team MTN-Qhubeka) just snuck past Daryl Impey (Orica GreenEdge) after 180km of gruelling racing. It was a massive disappointment to Daryl that his bike developed a mechanical in the sprint finish. Unfortunately, the prize giving was delayed by opinions regarding the result as to who should be wearing what jersey and why.

2013 Holiday Message from the President, Cycling South Africa

We close such a successful cycling year on an extremely sad note as our nation mourns the loss of one of our greatest leaders ever, our late President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. What an icon he was for not only our country, but for the whole world. We express our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace. We also remember our very own riders, officials and friends who have passed away this year. May their souls rest in peace.
