Cycling South Africa’s Para-cycling Commission is proud to announce that the following riders have been selected to represent South Africa in two major UCI Para-cycling road events in Europe.
Ernst van Dyk (current world champion H4 handcyclist)
Stuart McCreadie (H2 handcyclist)
Madre Carinus (T2 tricyclist)
Gerhard Viljoen (T2 tricyclist)
A management team comprising Dr Mike Burns (Team Manager), Elrick Kulsen (Coach) and Tom Paulsen (Physiotherapist) will be supporting the riders.
These riders will be representing South Africa at the London Paralympic Games at the end of August. The European tour will see our athletes competing in the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Rome, Italy from 25th to 27th May, and in the Schenkon Handcycling (H) and Tricycling (T) Championships in Switzerland from 2nd to 3rd June. The Schenkon Championships is a category P1 event, and has the greatest number of participating riders in the H and T classes of any event internationally.
Participation in these two events is foundational to the preparation of the South African road team for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
The riders will use four days between the two events to train in Switzerland, riding the routes and circuits that allow for excellent preparation for all phases of the highly technical time trial and road race events in which they will participate in London in September.
Although the riders are not aiming to deliver peak performances during the European tour (it is still 15 weeks too early for this), it is nevertheless expected that some good results will be achieved.
The team will depart for Europe on Tuesday 22 May, returning to South Africa on 5 June.
