Cycling South Africa’s Track Commission has great pleasure in announcing that the following riders have been selected to represent South Africa at the 2015 CAC (African Cycling Confederation) African Continental Track Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, from 21-25 January.
The city of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, will be hosting the first ever CAC African Continental Track Championships at the Sax Young Cycling Track in the heart of the city, in Alexandra Park. The prestigious event has opened the doors for South Africa’s cream of the crop in the track cycling domain to compete in a world-class event on home soil.
For track cyclists to compete in World Cups in order to qualify for the Olympic Games, they have to compete in international Grands Prix first to start earning enough points. Without competing in GPs first, the chances of competing in World Cups are very slim.
Cycling SA Track Commission Director, Johan Smith, said: “The African Continental Champs is not so much about our riders earning points, but more so that all of our best riders have been selected to represent their country, without any barriers to entry. It will however, also assist our top riders with regards to points.
“We are unsure as to how many African countries will compete. Only a few have cycle tracks. For this reason, CAC has allowed our provinces to enter teams as well. This is very good for the development of track cycling in South Africa.”
