South African Mountain Bike XCO National Champion Mariske Strauss (Silverback) achieved her best UCI World Cup result of her career at round no. three of the 2019 Mercedes Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series in a dry and dusty Vallnord, Andorra, at the weekend. She completed the six-lap race only three minutes behind the winning lady Anne Terpstra (NED 01:22:59) in 01:26:01 while compatriot Candice Lill finished 22nd in 01:27:34.
“I am so amped and excited for the next round! But first I’m going to take a moment to celebrate because I cracked the Top 15, she said. “This has been a long time coming with a lot of blood, sweat, tears, heaps of prayers and a couple of torn muscles.”
Friday’s short track race resulted in a third row start at the XCO race on Sunday where Mariske finished 20th. “The XCC race was brutal and there was no margin for error,” she added.
In the main race, Mariske had a good start and was sitting comfortably in the top 10 for the first two laps. She rode a consistent race and fought hard for her 13th place after six laps on one of the hardest tracks on the circuit.
Mariske chose to ride her Silverback Stratos dual suspension in Sunday’s race. Her next event is this weekend in Les Gets, France for round no. four of the 2019 Mercedes Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series.
