Fresh changes but same rush for Mankele nationals

The fourth round of the 2019 SA XCO National Cup Series is set to take place at Mankele Bike Park near Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, on Saturday 4 May. The event is UCI-accredited as Category 1 for the Elite and Junior categories – all age groups are welcome. The organisers promise the same trail rush that the establishment is well-known for with a few new changes for the added thrill.

First up, the riders will start in front of the coffee shop and head out to Mamba Koppie, which will lead to Steve’s Face Plant (eish!) and back to the start area again. Once participants have tackled the BMX course, they will head off onto a short section of the 4X track and onto the river single track. This trail leads the riders over the big table top at reception, and past the campsite.

The river single track is rolling super-fast at the moment and will be appreciated before the start of the big tar climb. Up, up, and up to Barry’s Rock Garden and then onto the Geoff Bridges section and the “Log Drop”. A new dual track has been opened after the “Nose Plant” section, which adds more flow to the trail and provides opportunity for overtaking.

“Str8 UP JACOB” is next on the list, which is guaranteed to hurt, but the reward is the next splendid single-track section, which leads you to “BBB”, after which you will hit the bike wash deck and into the sprint finish area.

Please note that Juniors and up are permitted to do the Log Drop, while age groups younger than Junior will be directed to the Slippery Snake as an alternative route.

Entries are open and can be completed quickly and simply using the CyclingSA Events APP (or via the website for desktop). Entries close on Tuesday 30 April. For any additional race information, please contact Mark Meyer on 082 3389532. For accommodation options, email
