The African Continental Championships for MTB XCO is being held in Windhoek, Namibia from 12-14 April 2019. Both UCI and non-UCI categories will be catered for, with the non-UCI categories open to all that wish to enter.
The UCI categories will be restricted to the country quota per category as set by the UCI for Continental Championships – the maximum quota allowable per category is five.
This requires Cycling South Africa to select a team for participation for the UCI categories being Junior, U23 and Elite.
The current selection policy places the selection decision under these circumstances with the Selection Committee of the local federation as with the case of entries into the UCI World Cup events.
It is unfortunately only possible to take SA Cup #1 and #2 into account. As these are back-to-back events, we understand the potential for illness and mechanicals and have considered this.
In addition, it would also be normal to consider the achievements of 2018.
With this in mind the Selection Committee has set the following qualifying criteria for inclusion for selection for the African Continental MTB XCO Championships:
The South African Champion for the specified Category for 2018;
The South African Champion from the preceding Category for 2018 should that rider transfer to a relevant UCI category in 2019;
The SA Cup Series winner from the specified category for 2018. Should that individual also be the SA Champion, then the number two from the SA Cup Series in 2018;
The balance of the positions will be determined by the cumulative results from SA Cup #1 and SA Cup #2.
This methodology will ensure plenty of competition for the remaining positions after the first three criteria are exercised.
There is no obligation to fill all five positions per category and selections will be made on a performance basis.
The team will be announced within two weeks after the completion of both SA Cup #1 and #2.
