The 2017 SA National MTB Championships head to Mankele MTB Park next weekend for both cross-country and downhill events, and top competitors are gearing up (with some heading back from international racing) for the trails in Mpumalanga from 22-23 July. Entries for the event are open and close on Tuesday 18 July.
On the cross-country front, defending Champion Mariske Strauss (OMX Pro Team) is expected to once again put on a phenomenal performance, with names like Team Spur’s Alan Hatherly, Pyga Eurosteel’s Phillip Buys, Julian Jessop and Stuart Marais coming out to play.
Downhill game players such as Stefan Garlicki (Investec) and Johan Potgieter are headed back to the country for the Champs after taking part in other international cups. Others to look out for are KwaZulu-Natal-based brothers Jonathan and Christopher Philogene will also be taking part, as well as young fire cracker, Sabine Thies. With Theo Erlangsen in the mix, the weekend is expected to be one for the books.
Temperatures appear to be hitting the mid-twenties with no rain towards the weekend the Championships, which will provide perfect conditions for the riders in the middle of winter.

Race registration for XCO and DHI takes place at Mankele Bike Park on Friday 21 July, closing strictly at 15:00; and for DHI only on Saturday 22 July, closing strictly at 12:00. There will be no XCO late entries accepted on Saturday 22 July, only DHI. A R50 fee is payable for all late entries.
