Entries for the second round of the 2015 Stihl SA XCO Cup Series taking place at Voortrekker Monument, Gauteng on Saturday 28 March 2015, are open.

With a UCI category 1 rating for Elite/U23 Men and Women, South Africa’s top XCO stars are expected to compete in a bid to accumulate UCI points towards their Rio Olympics 2016 qualification.

Juniors will also be able to earn UCI points as the second round of the national series is part of UCI Junior World Series. With the Junior categories taken out of the UCI MTB World Cups, Juniors will again participate in their own world series to garner valuable UCI points. International interest has been raised in the Junior category with entries already received by Switzerland – Dario Gemperle and Lucas Strittmatter.

Denmark’s National MTB Coach, Mads Bødker, will be arriving in South Africa for the race with seven riders from the Danish National MTB Team, including Danish Elite Champion Sebastian Fini Carstensen (currently 11th in the U23 world ranking), Junior World Champion Simon Andreassen and Junior Women’s World Championship silver medalist Marlene Degn.

Apart from physical and technical elements of the popular Voortrekker Monument track, there will be additional challenges to the track too. “The original track has been altered for a much more technical and challenging ride,” says race organiser, Pierre Nel. “The physical elements were all already there, we’ve just increased the technicality. There will also be a spectator-friendly “obstacle corner” which contains various other technical challenges - this all being in close proximity of the start/finish area,” says Nel.

Situated in a nature reserve at Voortrekker Monument, the full course covers a distance of 5,74km, with 163m of climbing. There are some fantastic forest sections with some smooth switchbacks, challenging climbs, flowing and technical descents and abundant game and plant life. “Riders will be racing amongst zebra, blesbok, black wildebeest and impala, to mention only a few,” says Nel.
