The second round of the Spur KZN Schools MTB Series takes place at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg on Friday 3 April 2015. The series will be part of the Pietermaritzburg MTB Festival, taking place over that Easter weekend.
The series targets primary to high school students who show a keen interest in mountain biking at a competitive level. The event’s Facebook page describes the series as “The breeding ground for future World and Olympic XCO MTB Champions”.
The race organisers saw 193 participants in the first leg of the series, and hope to see over 200 in the next event with even more schools across KZN getting involved. Event organiser Ewan Cochran said: “The major focus is to get the youngsters into mountain biking, specifically cross country, at school level. It’s really something we are trying to get more schools to bite into.”
The young riders will be able to experience the pure enjoyment of being amongst friends and doing something fun, as well as being in a competitive cycling environment.
“Your age determines the amount of laps that you do and technicalities of the track that you do. At school level, they will be competing ultimately for School Colours in mountain biking,” said Cochran.
“It’s really a super opportunity for the little ones to get on their bikes and be in the presence of the XCO community,” he said.
The KZN Series forms part of the National Spur Mountain Bike League. Selected individuals and High Schools can be selected to represent KZN Schools at the National School MTB Final at Bekker School in October.
The Spur KZN School Series event is just a taste of all of the activities on offer at Cascades MTB Park over the Easter weekend, which promises to be an enjoyable and action-packed occasion for the whole family.
