The organisers of the Mandela day Marathon MTB Dash that will take place on Saturday 30th August 2014 announced today that they will be partnering with Qhubeka to assist them in their goal of raising sufficient funds to provide 67 children with bikes allied to their Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme (BEEP). The Qhubeka initiative has been put in place in support of Mandela Day and they are asking cyclists to ride for 67 x minutes and to donate R 67.00 to the project so that bikes can be supplied to needy kids.
“The MTB event will now allow cyclists to be part of the Mandela Day Marathon celebrations and to be touched by the magic of the spirit of Madiba and it made perfect sense for us to partner with the Qhubeka initiative to try and get more young kids onto bicycles so that they can have mobility and especially to be able to get to school easier and therefore to be able to achieve more. In this small way, we are also able to honour the legacy of Mr Mandela”, said Event Director, Alec Lenferna.
The MTB Dash will be staged for the first time in 2014 and is part of the ever expanding Mandela Day Marathon programme which is a cornerstone project linked to and staged by the uMgungundlovu District Municipality. The event will see three distances being contested with the 42km and 21km prizemoney races in place and there will also be a 10km family race that can accommodate MTB riders of all ages and skills and fitness levels. The start and finish venue for all races will be the Mandela Capture Site in Howick.
Entries are open for the Mandela Day Marathon MTB Dash at www.roag.co.za and will close on the 23rd August or when the first 600 x entries have been received. General event information can be found at www.kznmtb.co.za.Donations to the Qhubeka project can be made at the event registration or via qhubeka.givengain.org.
