Meet Members of South African Road Cycling Commission: Tim Kock and Ian Goetham

Cycling South Africa is proud to announce the appointment of Tim Kock as the High-Performance Director of Road Cycling and the Convenor of Selectors for Road Cycling. Tim’s extensive career in cycling spans multiple disciplines, including track, road, and mountain biking. His personal achievements on the bike have earned him numerous accolades, establishing him as a formidable competitor in the cycling world.

Transitioning from athlete to coach, Tim has utilized his deep understanding of the sport to become one of South Africa’s premier cycling coaches. His career is marked by the development of top-tier athletes, including Olympians, continental champions, and numerous South African champions. Known for his strategic vision, commitment to athlete development, and innovative training methods, Tim has consistently produced outstanding results. In his new role, he is poised to shape the future of South African road cycling by identifying and nurturing talent, ensuring that the country’s road cycling teams are composed of the best and brightest athletes. With his comprehensive expertise and passion for the sport, Tim is set to elevate South African road cycling to new heights on the global stage.

We would also like to introduce one of the Provincial Commissioners who have been part of the Road Commission for a long time, Ian Goetham from the Western Cape, who brings a rich history and deep passion for cycling. Ian, married with two children, has been an educator at a primary school for 30 years. Cycling has been a part of Ian’s life since the age of 15 when he began competing at a high level. Hailing from Paarl in the Western Cape, known as the Mecca of Cycling, Ian’s foundation in the sport was laid at the Yorkshire Cycling Club, established by his grandfather, the late Cupido Green (Snr), in 1919.

Ian’s involvement in cycling extends beyond competition. He has held numerous leadership roles, including Chairperson of the Yorkshire Cycling Club, Founder Member of the Boland Cycling Union (now Cape Winelands Cycling), and Chairperson of Cape Winelands Cycling. He has also been instrumental in organizing significant events such as the Tour de Boland and served as Director and Coach at the Neotel Cycling Youth Academy.

Ian’s major achievements include managing national teams to success in prestigious competitions, such as the Tour of Rwanda and the inaugural Mzansi Tour. He has also managed South African teams at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the 2022 Continental Track Champs in Cairo, and the 2023 UCI Junior Track Cycling Champs in Cali, Colombia. Currently, Ian serves as the Road Director of Western Cape Cycling and until recently, he was the Chairperson of Cycling SA’s Youth, Transformation, and Development Commission. His current roles also include being a Cycling SA Road Selector and a key member of the Local Organising Committee for various national road championships.

Cycling South Africa is confident that under the leadership of Tim Kock and Ian Goetham, the future of road cycling in the country is in capable hands. Their combined expertise, dedication, and passion for the sport are sure to drive South African cycling to new levels of excellence and success.
