Local riders continue to shine at MTB Masters World Champs

It was another memorable day for local riders on the second day of the 2013 UCI MTB Masters World Championships as the south African contingent added four more gold medals to their overnight tally, taking their total to nine with one day of the competition left to go.

The day’s proceedings got underway with the Men’s 50-54 and 45-49 cross-country events, which saw the European riders come to the fore as Tommy Olsson (Sweden) and Patrick Jansen (Netherlands) claimed commanding victories respectively.

The chase groups did however see local riders put their hands up as the likes of Shan Wilson and Andrew Mclean added further colour to the local medal tally with a silver and bronze medal.

The afternoon’s session then saw the focus shift to the downhill course for all of the Men and Women’s age group finals that took place, and once again the volume of local riders reflected on the score sheet whilst downhill powerhouse, France, strengthened their medal tally notably too.

Rika Olivier (Women 40-49), Nigel Hicks (Men 30-34), Myles Kelsey (Men 40-44) and Chris Nixon (Men 45-49) all made the top step of the podium their own for the host nation, whilst the remaining gold medals went to French stars Tifenn Vialatte (Women 30-39), Cyril Meslier (Men 35-39) and Jean-Pierre Bruni (Men 50-54) as well as Austrian Max Schuster (Men 55-59).

A host of silver and bronze medals in the downhill competition then took the South African medal pool to 24; an impressive percentage of the 54 medals on offer thus far.

Sunday, the third and final day of competition of the Masters’ event before the Elite’s UCI MTB & Trials World Championships, will see three Men’s cross-country events taking place. Competition for top spoils in the Men’s 40-44, 35-39, 30-34 will be tight.

The UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships takes place at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg from 26 August to 1 September 2013, and will be preceded by the UCI MTB Masters World Championships from 21 to 25 August.
