BMX 2013 Season Wrap

Cycling South Africa’s BMX Commission held their annual awards ceremony in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal recently where a host of BMX riders were awarded for their achievements during the course of the year.

Riders were acknowledged for their achievements at Worlds, champions were applauded for their Grand National titles, winning teams were congratulated, and the riders and officials that attended the World Champs were acknowledged. The Provincial and Club Commissions were recognised for their efforts throughout the year. Without their commitment, BMX would not be possible in South Africa.

South Africa’s elite woman BMX star, Teagan O’Keeffe, walked away with the Till Trophy, which is awarded to the Elite performer of the year. O’Keeffe finished off her season 12th in the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup rankings.

The annual Zimbabwe BMX Invitational, which took place on 26 October, was once again a great success, with the trip strengthening the national relationship between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

On the local scene, progress is still full steam ahead for South Africa’s first Supercross (SX) track, which is currently being built at Giba Gorge MTB Park in KwaZulu-Natal. The much-anticipated track, which features an 8-metre start hill synonymous with SX, will provide our riders with the opportunity to practice the technical nature of this type of track, as well as come to grips with the start ramp in preparation for international World Cup competition. The track should be ready for racing by mid January 2014.

On behalf of the Cycling SA BMX Commission, we wish all BMXers a safe holiday and look forward to the 2014 season.
