Record-breaking entry field for Oudtshoorn Youth Fest

The Western Cape is gearing up for the annual Oudtshoorn Youth Festival, as it takes place this year from Monday 27th to Thursday 30th June 2016. Event Organiser, Corne Bence, is elated with the record-breaking entry list, and is ready for another spectacular four-day, team-orientated cycling event.

“Everything is running smoothly and preparations are going well,” said Bence. “It’s our biggest field ever to date, with over 200 entrants, so we are very happy,” he added.

Bence was pleased to announce that Cycling South Africa President, William Newman, will also attend the Festival, and that the organisers were excited to host him.

Co-organiser, Corne Botha said: “We are so very excited about this year’s event and have attracted young cyclists from the Western Province, Cape Winelands, West Coast, Eden, Eastern Province and Free State.”

The event is taking place at the well-known venue, Kobus se Gat. Botha explained the order of events: “We have the exciting Road Race on Monday. On Tuesday we will once again have the one kilometre Individual Hill Climb event, from just after Wilgewandel up to the Cango Caves. In the afternoon, we will have the Team Time Trial races, where teams of between six and eight riders will be taking part.

“On Wednesday we will be taking the cycling into the community, to Aurial College and this will be our Criterium Racing event. It will at this time where members of the community will be able to ask questions about cycling and learn about where they could get involved. Hopefully we can open their eyes to the excitement of the discipline.”

The Youth Festival’s last event takes place at the Oudtshoorn Quad Club on Thursday – where the Eden Cycling Club meets. This will be a Mountain bike Cross-country race. “We include this discipline into the Festival as it is one of the Olympic disciplines, so it’s great to get the riders involved here from a young age,” said Botha.

Botha concluded by saying: “We are already sitting on a record breaking entry field for the event, and we are aiming for 250 entries.”
