Eight medals and four national records for SA at Masters Track Champs

The 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Masters Championships took place at the Manchester Velodrome, Great Britain, from 1-8 October, and South Africa took home eight medals, as well as four new national records.

In the Men’s 35-39 Gert Fouche claimed the gold medal and World Championship jersey when he powered to victory in his Scratch race. He also went on to claim silver medals in both the Points race and Pursuit. The Pursuit saw Fouche claim a new South African national record with a time of 03:24.670. He just missed out on the bronze medal in the Time Trial event but manage to claim another national record of 01:07.095. This was Fouche’s first World Championships.

Ilze Bole also jumped on board the medal train as well to add to South Africa’s tally when she claimed the bronze medal in the Points race in the Women’s 35-39 category. Hylton Belitzky claimed the bronze medal in the Men’s 40-44 category and Amanda Akom set a new national record in the Women’s 50-54 Pursuit, with a time of 02:50.727.

In the Women’s 60-64 category, Ilna Lemmer claimed two bronze medals in the points and scratch races respectively, as well as a new national record in the Pursuit with a time of 02:55.834.

In the Men’s 70-74 category, John Moss finished in third place in the points race to claim yet another medal for the country.

Martin van Wyk said: “I would say it is an outstanding performance by the team and it just shows that south African Track is on the up. Next year’s World Masters Track Championships will be in Los Angeles in the USA, which is also an indoor wooden 250m track.”
