SA brings home World Champion at Masters Track Worlds

The 2015 UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships took place at Manchester Velodrome, United Kingdom from 3-10 October. South Africa was well represented, bringing home a number of medals and a rainbow Jersey for Ilna Lemmer.

Lemmer (60) secured three medals (a gold medal in the Women’s Points Race 60+ category and two bronze medals in the 2000m Pursuit and Scratch races), also breaking two South African records in her category in the 500m TT and 2000m Pursuit events.

On her success and experience in the United Kingdom, Lemmer said: “It was really a privilege to been chosen by Cycling SA to go to Worlds. I was in tears when I put the SA skin suit on for the first time. The facilities at Manchester are unbelievable – a heated, humidified, wooden track that’s so smooth. It feels as if you’re flying when you’re on the track as there is almost no resistance. To race against 10 ladies of my own age group from all over the world was an unbelievable experience. I extend a big thanks to my coach, Sheldon Bole, who believed in me and supported me all the way, and he was there next to the track to give advice and encourage me. He also helped most of the other South African participants with their own events.”

Lemmer’s cycling club surprised her at the airport with banners and cheers of support when she arrived home. “All my medals just encourage me to train even harder and to be even more successful next time. Even without track facilities like that in South Africa, we are good enough to complete against the best in the world,” she concluded.

Glen Heuvel competed in the Men’s Team Pursuit in a mixed nations team, “Birds of Prey”, where his team claimed the bronze medal in the Men 55-64 category.

In the Men’s 45-49 Scratch Race, Martin van Wyk (45) narrowly missed a podium position by one point, finishing in fourth place. Van Wyk finished in second place in the Brian Cossavella Memorial Scratch Race (Non Championship event), a race that is held in memory of Cossavella, a well-regarded figure in the Masters Track Cycling fraternity in the UK.

Gerrit Schepers (56) managed to secure a remarkable sixth place in his 500m Time Trial despite a crash the previous day, which left him with a broken rib and an injured groin.
