ATTENTION Youth and Juniors: Junior Track Cycling Programme

As part of Cycling South Africa’s 2020 vision and Talent Identification (TID) Programme, a long-term strategy is in place to develop under-16 and Junior riders. In the competitive world of track cycling, the importance of better-prepared and more skilled riders is ever increasing.

The ultimate goal of the Junior Track Cycling Programme for 2014 is to:

  • Improve the skills and performance of our U14 to Junior riders (March – April 2014)
  • Prepare our high performance Junior riders towards competing in the Junior Track World Championships in Seoul, Korea (April-August 2014)

This programme will be supplemented with a TID pathway for 2014+ (not included in this document).

Background

The TID Programme focuses on the fundamental guidelines of:

  1. Promoting cultural awareness
  2. Enhancing the holistic individual development of all athletes
  3. Educating riders on Sports Psychology and Nutrition
  4. Improving personal life skills
  5. Supporting Drug Free Sport

All of the 2014 training camps have been designed to support these guidelines.

Youth riders

As announced during 2013, Cycling SA has now introduced an under-16 Youth TID Programme to help even younger riders develop their racing skills and improve their training programmes in preparation for entry into the Junior Track Cycling Programme. The March to April 2014 activities of the programme will be open our Youth accordingly for vital skills development and performance improvements.

Junior riders

This year the Junior Track Cycling World Championships will be held on an outdoor 333m Velodrome in South Korea during mid-August. With the 2014 SA Track Championships also being hosted on a 333m track, our National Championships is excellently positioned to assist you in striving towards a competitive Junior Track World Championships.

The Junior Track Cycling Programme has been designed to optimise resources whilst driving performance.

In Conclusion

We aim to build on the past success of Cycling SA’s Junior Track Cycling Programme, which has seen an annual improvement in our young athletes’ performances at the UCI Junior Track World Championships over the past three years. For that, we encourage you to become involved in the programme.

Notification of the dates and locations for the March camps will be shared soon. We look forward meeting and working with you in the months to come!
