Amashova Africa’s only UWCT qualifier

KwaZulu-Natal’s premier cycle race, the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic road cycle race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban is the only African qualifying event for the 2016 UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) final when it takes place on 18 October 2015.

The UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) is a series of UCI-sanctioned races held all over the world. Some 15 qualifier events will qualify the top 25% in each age group to the Amateur Road World Championships, the former UWCT Final and UCI Masters Road World Championships, where the champions are awarded with the coveted rainbow jersey. The 2016 UWCT Final will be held in Perth, Australia.

While promoting high-level competition for Masters and Amateur, one of the aims of this series is the globalisation of “Cycling for All”. With that in mind, the geographical spread of the events is very important, alongside with strict organizational and sporting criteria, and a certain tourism interest. The 106km road cycling classic begins in Pietermaritzburg, famous for hosting UCI World Championship and World Cup events and finishes at Suncoast on Durban’s Golden Mile. Last year, a total of 11000 cyclists took part in the mass-participation event, a testament to its popularity.

For those cyclists looking for something a little shorter, then the 65km half challenge from Cato Ridge to Durban is available, as well as the even shorter 35km route from Hillcrest to Durban.
