Rainbow Challenge qualifier, Sappi Mankele this weekend (Mpumalanga)

The inaugural UCI World Rainbow Challenge will see veteran mountain bikers tussle it out in the marathon discipline for their own World Championship rainbow jersey at Cascades Mountain Bike Park in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday 28 June 2014.

Taking place the day prior to the 2014 UCI MTB Marathon World Championships at the same venue, South Africa’s Masters’ marathon competitors are utilising the opportunity to qualify for the prestigious UCI event by competing in at least one of the qualifying events.

Racing will be decided in the traditional five year age groups, starting with the 30-34 year category, provided there at least 6 riders in each class, with the men up to 59 years of age riding 70km and older men 50km, while women up to 49 years of age will ride the 70km layout and older women the 50km distance.

One of the Rainbow Challenge qualifying events is the Sappi Mankele MTB Challenge, which will be taking place at Mankele MTB Park near Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, on 22 March 2014.

The Sappi Mankele MTB Challenge offers singletrack, bush tunnels, dual track, and of course, some climbing. The organisers have reported that the trails are looking great, and are in superb condition for the weekend’s races.
