First Elite win for BMX rising star Limberg

Alex Limberg won his first Elite Men’s title after taking the overall win at legs four, five and six of the 2015 BMX National Age Group (NAG) Series at Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg, from 4-5 July. The young Capetonian mentioned on his social media platforms that he is “still buzzing”, and that the feeling of finally taking a victory was indescribable.

The city of Pietermaritzburg welcomed guests from other provinces with friendly smiles and warm weather. A well supported crowd, great atmosphere, and the cheers of families, coaches, friends and spectators filled the atmosphere around the event. The Alex Park BMX track showed off its upgrades with new concrete berms and start hill.

“Winning my first national event as an Elite is really awesome and it means a lot to me. It also means that my training is working, and I can see it finally all paying off,” said Limberg.

Discussing the importance of focus and concentration involved in not just competing for the top position, but staying there as well, Limberg said, “It was a real confidence booster. It was also really difficult leading the race, because instead of just having to attack as if you were in second place, you also had to defend your position, meaning you have to focus on what's happening at the back while moving forward.”

He mentioned that his training intensity isn’t tailored to focus on any specific events. “In BMX training, your body is always being pushed to the limit – it’s the only way you'll get stronger,” he said.

For Limberg, the win has been a goal for a long time. When chatting about his next goal, he had this to say: “The next goal for me will be hopefully to carry the momentum through to the next National Age Group series and maybe win the SA Championship. I’m also hoping to win my first Grand National title as an Elite.”

Legs 7 and 8 of the BMX NAG Series take place in Gauteng on 26 September with the SA BMX National Championships taking place on 27 September.
