About
The South African National Championships is the blue ribbon event for each cycling discipline and is held each year. The prestigious event crowns the National Champion in their chosen discipline, for their respective gender and age groups.
For 2020, the South African National Track and Para-Cycling Championships will be held for all categories at the Sax Young Cycle Track in Pietermaritzburg from 21-24th March 2020.
Categories
The age categories listed below will be used in this event. Participants who qualify for the Master’s categories can “ride-up” to the elite category.
Masters who enter and race in elite events at National champs cannot race as a Master at the same event.
Based on the entry numbers some categories, typically in the Masters age groups, may be combined. Details will follow shortly before the event.
Category/Race Matrix
The matrix below shows races which will be offered per age category.
No late entry or changes
Due to UCI requirements we need to submit all start lists prior to the event. We are therefore unable to make any changes to the entries. Riders who do not show up at the start of an event will be subject to a fine as prescribed by the UCI.
Keirin Qualifiers
The Elite Men (12 riders) and Junior Men (12 riders) will have to take part in a qualifier round as per UCI regulation 3.2.135. The order of the qualifying times will determine the distribution into Heat 1 and Heat 2. A change to the program will be made to include a Final for positions 7-12.
Medals
All Youth, Junior and Elite categories will receive medals per category. Masters, with a few exceptions, will get medals in 5 year age increments for individually timed races and 10 year increments for bunch races, irrespective if they are combined to form a larger start group / consolidated program line item.
Exceptions will be communicated closer to the time when entry numbers are known.
Who can take part
This event is open to South African citizens and permanent residents. The organisers may verify/confirm your participation with your Provincial/ Regional Commission.
Junior, Elite & Masters must be in possession of a valid Cycling SA Racing License. All riders must present this license or membership at registration and upon demand during the event. No one-day event licenses will be sold.
Riders are not considered registered until all administrative requirements have been fulfilled:
- Entry has been completed and received
- Entry fee has been paid in full, in advance
- Cycling SA Track Racing License or Membership has been verified
Costs
Entry fees for this year’s championship is based on a per-event bases, which departs from the fixed fees charged in earlier years. The reason for this is two-fold:
Participants enter as many events as possible during registration, but then either cancel or do not show up for the events on the day. This affects the organiser’s ability to effectively plan the race program, as each event needs to take into account the planned number of participants. As a result last-minute changes to the program causes additional work for administrators and officials and cause confusion and negatively affects the athletes in their preparation for their events.
Access to funding for national events like this have been in a steady decline over the years. This is evident in the willingness of provinces to host these events. Kwa-Zulu Natal is committed to hosting a proportional share of these national events to further the sport, but it requires funding to do so. With a projected budget of over R250,000 in expenses to host this event we need to rely on the cycling community to contribute towards these costs.
Fee Structure
The fee structure is based on the number of events each person will participate in in accordance with the fee structure listed below.
Starting with an initial, compulsory fee of R50, the first 5 events will cost an additional R100 per event, then event 6 to 7 will cost an additional R75 each, then event 8 to 10 will cost an additional R50 each
Team Events
For team events, each participant should enter for the event, then one of the participants or your manager should send us an email to kzn.track.cycling@gmail.com, stating the name of the team, the names of the riders and the event you refer to.
