Cycling South Africa and KZN Cycling with the support of KwaZulu-Natal Sport and Recreation recently hosted a National Commissaire’s Course, which welcomed 18 candidates from KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, in Howick.
The essence of the training course was to build capacity in aid of the KwaZulu-Natal Cycling Development Programme, which has already produced hundreds of budding young cyclists throughout the province.
Cycling SA’s Technical Commission Chair, Wynand Pretorius, said: “Candidates attended the Trainee Commissaires Course and were taken through the more extensive modules of timekeeping and judging, ethics, duty of care, road cycling and track cycling.”
The course ended with the formal examination process.
While the majority of the candidates were attending the course for the first time, three of the attendees had previously been taken through a basic timekeeping & judging course last year during the CAC (Confederation for African Cycling) Track Continental Championships held in Durban. At this event, they shadowed qualified commissaires afterwards to gain practical experience throughout the event.
Speaking about the interest in attendance, Wynand said: “I was really impressed with the turnout and all the candidates were all very committed and displayed a good spirit of teamwork during the course. I must commend KZN Cycling and the KwaZulu-Natal Sport and Recreation for the effort made to build capacity in the province.”
KZN Cycling Chief Operating Officer, Alec Lenferna, said: “18 candidates completed the course and this will be the first step on the ladder for them to work as commissaires at events here in South Africa and, depending on their progress, can also lead to them achieving International Commissaire qualifications in the years ahead. This will allow them to work on major events across the globe.”
