About

The fourth and final round of the 2017 SA National MTB Cup Series XCO (UCI Cat 1 and Junior World Series), takes place at Cascades MTB Park on Saturday 17 June. About

Free State’s capital city, Bloemfontein, plays host to the penultimate round of the 2017 SA National MTB Cup Series XCO (UCI Cat 1 and Junior World Series), which takes place at Happy Valley Conservancy on Saturday 6 May. Event organiser Willem Raubenheimer is well on track with the preparations for the second running of the National Series at the same venue in two years. The significance of this event, like the others in the series, is the UCI Category 1 rating, which allows top contenders in the Elite and Junior categories to earn valuable UCI points at the races. There will be two food vendors on race day in support of Husky Rescue Bloemfontein and the Woodlands Hills Church. Gourmet Coffee will also be available for the caffeine addicts! There will be one big entertainment area at the start/finish area with TV’s airing live footage of the event. The event can also be viewed via live streaming on Streamit360.tv. If there is a mechanical during practice, then we have some of the best Cycling Shops in South Africa, with Cycle World, Cyclotech and Enduro Planet just around the corner from the venue and will also be there to help at the venue on the 5th and 6th of May.

The track

The 2016 course was well received by most of the participants and was praised for being very “flowing”, for its natural obstacles and spectator friendly design. The only change to the 2017 course is:
  • A short 100m single track climb and downhill on the last part of the course
  • Some upgrades to the pump track and the “Grey’t Drop” in the beginning of the course
The 2017 course will be five kilometres in length, with 170-metre vertical ascent. It features hand built single track with plenty of overtaking opportunities with two challenging climbs of 660m (50m ascent) and 350m (40m ascent), natural rock gardens, pump (flow) track, gap jumps, drop offs and two technical downhill’s. This year’s course will have one Tech/Feed Zone at the Start/Finish area and a Tech Zone just after the Rock Garden Descent.

Accommodation

The venue is easy accessible and in the heart of Bloemfontein, and only 13km from the Bloemfontein Airport. The Happy Valley Conservancy is surrounded by a full range of accommodation facilities, with one of the best being Solo Gracia Guesthouse, only 1,4km from the venue. Happy Valley Conservancy is situated in Brill Street between Harry Smith Street, Aliwal Street, Collins Road and First Avenue.

Places of interest

Places of interest nearby include the Loch Logan Waterfront Mall and Mimosa Mall, where the not-so-keen cyclists can visit for shopping or refreshments. Franklin Nature Reserve (Naval Hill – where the large statue of Nelson Mandela is situated) is also nearby. This nature reserve is one of the only Nature Reserves in the world to be situated within the perimeters of a city. Other attractions include Cheetah Experience, Oliewenhuis Art Museum, Bagamoya Wildlife Estate and the Anglo Boer War Museum to name a few.

Provisional Schedule of Events

The track

Using the much of the same basis as the 2016 race track, the course has 2 big climbs/descents and a flow/play section. The course is just over 4km in length and crosses the Wolwespruit 4 times. There is also a trail intersection were the riders leaving tech 2 will cross over the trail linking the new rock garden and the small climb up to the start of the flow line. There are new natural rock drops, a new rock garden and a new gap jump. One of the 4 spruit crossings is also a technical crossing compared to the other 3 normal crossings. Tech 2 will be the main tech/feed zone where support gazebos can be pitched up on the western (Tech 1) side of the zone. The Nippers & Sprogs have a shortened track which cuts out the two big climbs/descents and only crosses the Wolwespruit twice.
