Training camp and seminars organised by the UCI in Africa

The UCI (International Cycling Union), with the support and collaboration of Dr. Wagih Azzam, President of CAC and UCI Vice President, Mr. Yao Allah Kouamé, CAC Secretary General and Mr. William Newman, President of Cycling South Africa, will be hosting a rider training camp, coaching seminar, mechanics course and anti-doping information sessions in January and February prior to and during the 2015 African Continental Road and Track Championships to be held in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, between 9 and 14 February.

The development of cycling around the world, particularly on the African continent is a key objective of the UCI’s global strategy.

In order to maximise opportunities for the development of cycling in Africa and ensure all athletes and all staff involved in cycling benefit fully, the UCI, in close collaboration with the World Cycling Centre Africa, is organising the following:

1. 10 January to 14 February 2015: Rider Training Camp
The World Cycling Centre Africa is holding a training camp in Potchefstroom, South Africa. This camp, which is fully subscribed, is targeted at men from the Junior and U23 categories and women from the Junior/Elite categories. The trainees will receive high level coaching along with performance evaluation in preparation for the 2015 African Continental Road & Track Championships.

All meals and accommodation for the full duration of the camp, as well as transport to and from the races and race entry fees, are covered for athletes.

2. 4-14 February 2015: Coaching seminar (French/English)
A coaching seminar will be held in Pietermaritzburg for men and women; the course will run for 5 days between 4 and 8 February, followed by evening analysis sessions with the coaching expert on race days between 9 and 14 February. A certificate will be delivered at the end of the seminar to all the attendees.

3. 10-13 February 2015: Mechanics course (French/English)
After the great success of the mechanics course at the African Continental Championships in Sharm El-Sheikh last year, a further course will be held in Pietermaritzburg and will be conducted by UCI Master Mechanic Mr. Alex Roussel.

4. 10-13 February 2015: Anti-doping information sessions (French/English)
Anti-doping education in cycling is of paramount importance and with the new WADA Code taking effect from 1st January 2015, the UCI has organised information sessions to be conducted by UCI Doctor and Scientific Advisor, Dr. Mario Zorzoli, in order to build awareness. These are to take place during the 2015 African Continental Championships, are aimed at athletes and coaches and will cover anti-doping basics as well an update on the main changes of the new WADA Code to ensure full understanding of rights and responsibilities.

The UCI and WCC will cover the costs of all the above courses.

If you wish to take part or require further information on the coaching seminar, mechanics course and anti-doping information sessions, please contact Jean-Pierre Van Zyl (mailto:Jean-Pierre.VanZyl@uci.ch) before Tuesday 20 January 2015. As spaces are limited, we would advise you to register your interest early.
