Diepsloot Mountain Bike Academy wins prestigious Jack Cheetham Award

Cycling South Africa congratulates the Diepsloot Mountain Bike Academy (DMA) on being awarded the prestigious Jack Cheetham Award for 2014 at a ceremony hosted by Murray and Roberts on Thursday 6 November.

The award bestowed by Murray & Roberts in partnership with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) targeted sports development projects for able-bodied individuals or teams that have the potential to be champions. The award recognises the character and ideals of Jack Cheetham, a former director of Murray & Roberts and captain of the South African cricket team in the 1950s.

Chairman of the Diepsloot MTB Academy, André Ross, said: “This year DMA was nominated by Cycling South Africa and emerged the winner out of 30 nominees from various national sport federations in South Africa. In addition, the award comes with financial support of R500k over five years from Murray and Roberts. This welcome income will be earmarked towards improving the employability and entrepreneurship prospects of select members of DMA who have shown leadership potential but lack the means to pursue tertiary education.

“This award follows closely on the DMA being awarded the Beyond Sport Johannesburg Local Impact award last week at the Beyond Sport Summit.

“A heartfelt thank you goes to all of you our partners and sponsors; thank you for the belief shown in the work that we do in trying to provide opportunities for young leaders from disadvantaged backgrounds to self actualise and advance themselves.”
